The hair that I used in Poser doesn't quite go with the vision that I have in mind for this image so I decided to paint my own.
On a layer behind the model I began by using a 24 pixel Charcoal brush and with the airbrush set at 100% pressure began painting strokes using a medium brown color. I then chose a lighter and darker version of the brown and used the 12 pixel Stipple brush at 50% pressure to paint on a few highlights and shadows. With the smear tool set at about 75 to 80% pressure and the 12 pixel Stipple brush I started pulling the hair along the length of the strands to blend the colors.
On a new layer still behind the model, I used the airbrush, a 54 pixel charcoal brush and the medium brown once again to paint hair. For this layer, I also used the 15 and 25 pixel Charcoal brushes to brush on some lighter and darker brown and then the 15 pixel Charcoal brush and the smear tool to "drag" the hair out.
I used the dodge tool set at 50% pressure and the 12 pixel stipple brush to add a bit of highlight to the curls and the Burn tool at 50% pressure and the 12 pixel stipple brush to darken the area near the head just a bit.
Here, I've duplicated the first hair layer and dragged it up above the model and the arm ribbons. Then using a charcoal brush painted some darker reddish brown near the head. Using the smear tool at 80% pressure and a the 15 pixel Charcoal Brush dragged the lighter brown hair into the darker reddish brown that I had just painted.
On a new layer above the previous one I used the 34 pixel Charcoal brush to paint more hair strands. Using the 12 pixel Stipple Brush and the Burn tool I darkened some of the strands and then went back to the smear tool to pull out the hair.
